There was nothing but positive vibes as teachers and students in Vermilion Parish headed back to school on Thursday.

The faculty at Eaton Park Elementary School in Abbeville welcomed students with posters and hugs.

Second grader Makilah Levine says she loves her school and she’s not sad to see the summer go but excited for what the new school year will bring.

“I love to go to music and PE,” said Makilah when asked about her favorite part of school.

Principal Angela Godwin says they want to make sure their students know they’re important. They do that by giving them jobs, like working in the school’s garden.

"We instill in them that they are leaders. They do have value,” said Godwin. “We bring that out in each one of them so that they can flourish and thrive."

Godwin is also proud about the school only having two new teachers this year. Students are able to come back and reunite with familiar faces.

"Our adults are phenomenal over here. They're dedicated and committed with high expectations, and we look forward to what the future holds for Eaton Park,” said Godwin.

Eaton Park is one of 20 schools in Vermilion Parish.
