The closure of I-10 West on the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge is extending into its third day as crews work to remove debris from the roadway.

State Police say that crews worked through the night in order to remove the remaining debris and vehicles from the Interstate. There was no time-frame on when the Interstate would reopen.

DOTD will conduct an inspection of the bridge before the westbound lanes are reopened. That inspection could take place sometime on Wednesday morning.

The closure on I-10 West begins at Mile Marker 125 (Atchafalaya Basin Bridge). Traffic is still being diverted at LA 415 North (Lobdell) to US 190 West. Congestion remains at LA 1 (Port Allen).

Eastbound lanes of traffic opened in the early morning hours of Tuesday August 27.

Monday's fiery, multi-vehicle crash involved three 18-wheelers and several passenger vehicles. State Police say a stalled vehicle in the roadway caused a chain reaction that resulted in the crash around 2:00 pm. On Tuesday, State Police released new photos of the burned wreckage. One photo shows the contents of a burned 18-wheeler that appears to have been carrying produce, another carrying a load of lumber.

A 31-year-old truck driver, identified as Christopher McGee of Florida, was killed in the crash. Other drivers received minor to moderate injuries.
