Opelousas man allegedly stole more than $50,000 from elderly veteran

An Opelousas man has been arrested on charges of theft and forgery after allegedly stealing money from an elderly veteran.

Police say a lengthy investigation began into Curley Charles, 51, fraudulently taking money through various illegal transactions from a military veteran over 90 years old.

The transactions took place over several months.

Family of the veteran pursued the case after his passing, and they discovered the illegal transactions had been taking place, according to police.

Charles was arrested on Friday, March 13, and booked into the St. Landry Parish Jail on the following charges:

- Theft ($51,703.03)
- Attempted Theft ($11,173.90)
- Forgery (33 counts)
- Monetary Instrument Abuse (29 counts)
- Exploitation of Persons with Infirmities

A bond has not yet been set.
