Officials with the UL Emergency Operations Center say they are making some changes to their guidelines this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Director of Risk Management Joey Pons explained that this year, some unique challenges are being posed because of the coronavirus.

In making their preparations, UL has to be mindful of all that is necessary to keep students, employees, and visitors safe, said Pons.

"One of the things that we have to be mindful for when we look at hurricanes and tropical storms is our student residents population. Our student residents on campus have to be cared for, and of course now that presents even more unique challenges. If they are sheltering in place in their resident halls, (we have) to make sure they are doing so safely with respect to the COVID-19 requirements."

In response to difficult events, Pons said the University tends to look on past experiences to gain knowledge about current and future potential situations.

"We think about what went right and what went wrong, what we got lucky on and most importantly, what we can do to improve our response for future events. This is no exception, we will be doing that for Cristobal as well."

He added that the University will be keeping up to date with latest information and updates from state and local officials, particularly public health officials.

"Certainly we have to be mindful that the storm is potentially dangerous, but we have to also make sure that we are being mindful of the COVID-19 situation."
