Lafayette Police are investigating a Saturday morning shooting that began with an altercation between two people.

Shortly before noon, officers were called to the 1300 block of W. Willow St. in reference to a shooting. Officers learned that two individuals were riding in the same vehicle and became involved in a verbal altercation.

The altercation quickly turned violent when both subjects produced handguns and began shooting at each other, said LPD spokesman Sgt. Wayne Griffin.

One subject ran from the scene and the other drove away. Neither was present when police arrived.

While police were at the scene, officers learned through a second 911 call that one of the individuals involved drove to a residence on Orchid St. First responders located the victim suffering from a single gunshot wound. Paramedics performed life-saving techniques then the victim was transported to a local hospital.

Sgt. Griffin said police are actively working both crime scenes and the investigation is ongoing.
