Lafayette Sheriff Mark Garber is suing Lafayette Parish and LCG over funding for the parish jail.

First reported by the Current, the lawsuit accuses LCG of not paying its share for maintenance of the jail as required by law.

The sheriff and the city-parish council have been at odds over funding for months.

In August, Garber asked for an additional $1.8 million on top of the $2.4 million proposed for courthouse funding.

Mayor-President Joel Robideaux's CAO questioned Garber's timing, and the city-parish council did not include Garber's request in the 2019-2020 budget.

The Current reports that it's not clear how much Garber is seeking, and it "accuses LCG of not covering a variety of state-mandated costs - from medical care to maintaining the jail, to feeding and clothing prisoners, to educating them and providing access to chaplain services."
