Lafayette Police are working to clear a major accident in the 800 block of General Mouton.

The watch commander tells KATC at least three vehicles were involved.

Nicolas Messina was with family in his driveway when the crash happened.

"My sister was loading her trunk and this silver Camaro came barreling down the road behind us when we had our backs turned," Messina said. "The driver veered off the road and hit my neighbor's truck and pushed it a good 20, 25 feet. When he pushed the truck, it started to pin my sister."

Messina said he grabbed his sister to get her out of the way. His sister and two children inside her vehicle were brought to an area hospital.

Meanwhile, another woman was also standing nearby. That woman was also hit, but she is expected to be okay.

Witnesses say after the crash, the driver took off on foot.

While on scene, KATC noticed police did detain someone. Witnesses say the man police handcuffed and put in the back of a unit is the driver who fled.

The speed limit on General Mouton is 35 MPH.

Messina said, "He hit it hard doing a whole lot faster than he should have been doing. He never hit the brakes, we never heard the tires squeal, We didn't even know he was behind us until he made contact with the truck and we heard the boom. By the time that happened, it was too late."

Messina went on to say, "His top priority was not the concern of the lives he could have ended. His main concern was getting away from the scene of the accident."

This is a developing story and we will update it as soon as more details are available.
