Downtown Lafayette could be home to a couple dozen new residents by the end of the month.

The Vermilion Lofts are close to being complete, and they are already available for lease.

The building houses both commercial and residential units and is in walking distance from everything in the downtown district.

Stephen Ortego, architect of the lofts, explained, "If you move down here, you could almost get rid of your car. You would save a lot of headache and a lot of money. We actually have just as much bike parking on this property as we do parking spaces. There is off street parking available but we also very much focus on the bike and on the pedestrian here. If you know about walk score, we have a walk score of 90 here which means it's a walker's paradise and you could do about all of your daily activities by walking here."

Ortego said that this is one of the first residential projects built in the downtown area in almost a century.

"We're really excited about being part of this rejuvenation, this renaissance that's happening downtown. We see all these great restaurants opening up on Jefferson and now we're going to be having mixed use, more retail."
