New Iberia pastor holds rally in honor of George Floyd

Posted at 6:07 PM, May 30, 2020

A New Iberia pastor is holding an event Saturday night in light of the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis earlier this week.

Pastor Lawrence Levy is holding a theatrical/motivational speech event at the corner of Hopkins and Lumbard Streets at a store called The One Stop.

City officials are involved in the event, including the New Iberia Police Department and the city's mayor.

Resident Rosalind Bobb, whose son was killed in the city 14 years ago, said attending the event was important to her.

"This is real," she said. "This is what's happening today."

Bobb said the event is important to show people that help comes from God. She is the organizer of a local non-profit, Lifeway Support Ministry, that helps grieving families and mothers with broken hearts.

She added that in New Iberia, there are several unsolved cases that need to be taken care of.

"I had to go out and get my child's killer caught, I did the work. Different times now. If I tried that now, I'd probably be dead," Bobb explained.

What can people do?

"Do what you have to do to fight for your people."

Levy is planning another event in Lafayette in the near future called a Love My City Peace Rally, but would include all of Acadiana. Its purpose would be to bring all residents together in a show of equality, and to build a better community and society for young people.
