A Lafayette couple has lost everything following an overnight house fire in Lafayette.
The Lafayette Fire Department says they responded at 8:00 pm on Sunday, December 27, to a house fire in the 100 block of Oak Crest Drive.
Firefighters say neighbors noticed smoke coming from the home and called 911. Upon arrival to the scene firefighters say the single-family home was fully involved.
Smoke and flames were reportedly coming from the front door and windows.
Emergency crews were able to contain the fire within ten minutes.
The department says that the home sustained heavy fire damage. A cat was also killed in the fire.
LFD says that the home's occupants, a young couple, had left the home about two hours prior to the fire being noticed. Neighbors reportedly saw the smoke coming from a window and went to assist the home thinking the owners were inside.
Upon forcing the door open, neighbors were able to free the owners' dog from the burning home. A cat was also found later by firefighters. The dog and cat are fine, officials say.
Fire officials have determined that the fire originated in the kitchen. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
