On Monday, Waitr began making special deliveries of donated food items to one local food bank.
The deliveries are the culmination of a month-long food drive during which the Waitr collected non-perishable food donations at select Lafayette-restaurant partner locations.
The goal of the drive was to help feed local families in need.
Donations will be picked up beginning Monday from local restaurants who partnered with Waitr for the food drive. Those restaurants include Pizza Village (2340 Kaliste Saloom Road in Lafayette); Twins (2801 Johnston Street in Lafayette); Sushi Masa (3920 Ambassador Caffery Parkway in Lafayette); Pizza Artista (219 St. Nazaire Road Suite G-1 in Broussard); Lee's Grocery & Hardware (3525 N University Ave. in Lafayette).
Waitr says that the donations will be delivered to the Second Harvest Food Bank in Lafayette. They are hopeful that the added food items will help with the demand on food banks and pantries caused by the COVID-19 crisis.
"Our customer base for Waitr has been so loyal to us and what better way to give back than in a time of need. Everyone is having struggles right now personal struggle financial struggles, let's take care of that one thing for them. Let's take care of dinner for them. As we always fed people in the past we are going to feed you again but in a different way," said Tommy Angelle, Marketing Operating Associate for Waitr.
Waitr customers have also donated money to the Holiday Food Drive when they ordered from the favorite restaurants on the app or the Waitrapp.com website. Waitr says that it will match a portion of all the customers' donations.
The most-needed food bank items included proteins (canned tuna, dried or canned beans, soup, peanut butter), grains (high-fiber cereal, oatmeal, pasta, rice), canned fruits and vegetables, and bottled water.
