LAFAYETTE PARISH, La. - Southside High School students are getting a dose of virtual reality (VR).

The Cargill plants in Breaux Bridge and in Avery Island donated $10,000 for a VR lab. The two plants donated $5,000, and through Cargill's corporate giving fund a 100% match was granted for an additional $5,000.

The VR lab will be used with Google Expedions that guides students on virtual field trips with hundreds of options for destinations. Google Expedions is an app that can be used in conjunction with lessons in social studies, science, and ELA.

"They can go swimming with fish in the great barrier reef," said Melanie Fink, librarian at Southside High. "We can travel to outer space. We can go to naval carriers. Our upperclassmen can can tour college campuses, explore different careers. I mean the possibilities are endless."
