LAFAYETTE, La. — The Lafayette Police Department have confirmed that they have a juvenile suspect in custody in connection with Wednesday's fatal shooting that left one dead.

LPD say that the victim of Wednesday's shooting on the Evangeline Thruway succumbed to injuries received in the shooting on Thursday.

Police identified the victim as 24 year-old Kendarious Sam of Lafayette, a person assigned male at birth. However, KATC has learned from the Human Rights Campaign that she identified as female, and used the name Kee Sam.

The shooting took place on August 12, in the 2200 block of the NE Evangeline Thruway.

Sam was found by officers suffering from a gunshot wound. First aid was administered and Sam was taken to a local hospital, where she later died.

The investigation is ongoing.
