Victim identified in fatal crash on West Congress and Marie Antoinette

LAFAYETTE, La. - The identity of a fatal crash victim has been released by police.

On July 27, 2020, at 4:00 pm, officers with the Lafayette Police Department responded to a major traffic crash in the 3000 block of W. Congress St. involving two vehicles.

The victim was operating a vehicle in the 400 block of Marie Antoinette St. approaching its intersection with the 3000 block of W. Congress St., according to Sgt. Wayne Griffin, spokesperson for the Department.

The driver of the second vehicle was traveling on W. Congress St. approaching its intersection with Marie Antoinette St.

Investigators say both vehicles entered the intersection at the same time where the crash occurred.

Both drivers were transported to a local hospital. Shortly after arrival, the driver of the first vehicle, Clay Benton, 85, was pronounced dead.

This investigation is ongoing.
