LAFAYETTE, La. - Police are asking for help in locating a stolen chalice.
On April 15, 2020, at 9:35 a.m., UL Police responded to a burglary at Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic Church at 201 E. St. Mary Blvd, according to Lt. Billy Abrams, spokesperson for the UL Police Dept.
The chalice was reported missing from the sacristy room inside the church. The religious item is described as a nearly 100-year-old antique Gothic gold plated chalice originally valued at $2,800.
That monetary value pales in comparison to the sentimental value the chalice holds for one of Our Lady of Wisdom's priests.
"It was the chalice I said my first mass in. Like I said, my mom's wedding band is under it. My name's engraved under it. It's just a very, a very special piece to me, so
I'd like the person to know, look you didn't just take a chalice, you took a part of my heart," said Father Rene Pellessier.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Lt. Zachary at 337-296-4375.
