LAFAYETTE, La. - Drivers on the section of Kaliste Saloom Road, where the road is being widened to five lanes, should prepare for a significant traffic shift on Monday, July 13, 2020 at 9:00 a.m. The shift is necessary for construction crews to complete the final phase of the roundabout (center of the roundabout) at E. Broussard and Kaliste Saloom Roads

“Drivers will still be able to get to and from any direction at this intersection,” Lafayette Consolidated Government Public Works Engineer III Mark Lavergne said.

"The traffic signal that was just installed at Grand Pointe Apartments, which will be energized on Monday, is temporary," Lavergne added, "and the existing traffic signal at E Broussard Road will be removed as well."

E. Broussard to Johnston/Johnston to E. Broussard

  • Drivers on E. Broussard traveling to Johnston Street (northbound) will detour at the roundabout onto the new section of Kaliste Saloom Road, cross the new bridge, and will turn left at the new temporary traffic signal in front of Grand Pointe Apartments, then onto the old Kaliste Saloom Road, which heads back to the existing intersection and traffic signal at E. Broussard Road.
  • Drivers on E. Broussard Road coming from Johnston Street (southbound) can continue southbound through the roundabout or turn left onto the old Kaliste Saloom Road.

Ambassador Caffery to Kaliste Saloom Road

  • Drivers coming from Ambassador Caffery to Kaliste Saloom Road (westbound) will be forced to travel on the old Kaliste Saloom Road to the traffic signal at E. Broussard Road, where they can turn left or right onto E. Broussard Road.

Lavergne said roundabout construction is expected to be completed sometime in September, weather permitting. Traffic will then shift back to the new portion of Kaliste Saloom Road, allowing drivers to move freely through the roundabout at E. Broussard Road. “With the new roundabout, especially compared to stop signs or traffic signals that are in place now, traffic will move more efficiently,” Lavergne said.

The roundabout construction will complete Phase 3 A of widening Kaliste Saloom Road. Phase 3 B, from Grand Pointe Apartments to Ambassador Caffery Parkway, is ongoing. Once the full 2.2-mile stretch between Ambassador Caffery Parkway and E. Broussard Road is completed, the roadway will have five lanes, with a turn lane in the middle and sidewalks.
