“We’re homestyle comfort food,” says Hub City Diner general manager Jason Redmon. “We're a 1950s All-American diner and we do breakfast lunch and dinner--- good food at a good price, good service and we'll treat you like family."

Takeout Tuesday brings us to the Oil Center in Lafayette and to Hub City Diner. It’s been around for 30 years-- since 1990-- and customers will tell you the hamburger steak, the chicken fried steak, and the club sandwiches and the milkshakes are all still very, very good.

It was once called Stansbury's… but Hub City Diner is the name by which most Acadiana residents know this three-meal eatery.

The pandemic has been admittedly rough…"it's been pretty devastating."

But that doesn't mean Hub City bowed down to Covid-19. “But we just put our dukes up and kept punching through taking each day at a time and now we've made it,” says Redmon.

Every restaurant can talk about its staff being like family-

But at Hub City Diner--- you've gotta love this-- even though most of its staff was laid off, the restaurant continued to feed its furloughed workers a family-sized meal.

“Every Sunday they would come in and pick up their meals,” he explains. “So that way we could still be part of their lives and see how they were doing."

Guess what? All of those laid-off workers have come back.

Safety measures… there are plexiglass dividers between booths, and small packets of salt, pepper and other condiments to minimize the number of times items are touched by customers at each table.

And with Phase II in gear-General manager and Redmon, at 20-year Hub City employee and soon to be the new owner, says business has picked up. “We get to know our customers by name; we're a big family. We've been seeing our old faces coming back and we've been saying ‘welcome home’.”
