On Monday, October 7, students gathered at the Central Fire Station on East Vermilion Street in Lafayette to learn about fire safety.

The classes are being hosted by the Lafayette Fire Department from October 7 through October 18 to students in kindergarten and first grade.

National Fire Prevention Week began on Sunday, October 6 and will continue until Saturday, October 12.

This year's theme is "Not Every Hero Wears a Cape, Plan and Practice Your Escape."

"Situational awareness is a skill people need to use wherever they go," says Fire Chief Robert Benoit. "No matter where you are, look for available exits. If the alarm system sounds, take it seriously and exit the building immediately."
