Louisiana State Representative Vincent Pierre and the Louisiana National Guard handed out free masks to local residents in Lafayette on Saturday.

All residents had to do was drive up to 728 S. Buchanan Street, and pick up a free mask.

"As cases increase, it's important to ramp up wearing masks or face coverings - to help Stop the Spread," Rep. Pierre said.

Volunteer Joshua Pierre said the giveaway is meant to help curtail community spread of the virus after the recent spike in cases in the area.

"[Community spread] has definitely caused an increase in the 18- to 35-year olds, and it's not the 18-35 year olds we are concerned about. It's the elderly population that has been extremely ravaged by this virus."
