The Lafayette Parish School System announced that Southside High School will transition to virtual learning for all students effective Monday, November 16 through November 30.

The school will be closed to all students and the public, but staff will report to school to continue virtual education of students. In addition, all extracurricular activities have been canceled until further notice.

According to a release from the school system, although the number of positive COVID cases on campus remain low, the number of students quarantined due to close contact are now at approximately 11%.

"Upon conducting the necessary contact tracing, we found that a large number of Southside High School students that are currently in required quarantine did not have an exposure to COVID-19 at school," the release states. "Rather, these exposures are attributed to community spread with activities outside of the school setting. Therefore we implore our entire community to join us in helping slow the spread of this virus. Especially with flu season beginning, mitigation measures outside the school day and on weekends are extremely important. We want to remind everyone to wear masks, limit large gatherings, and be proactive in social distancing."

More information for students will be provided by school administration, the release states.
