Simone Champagne has been appointed to fill the unexpired term for City Council Division A replacing Jamey Abshire.
Mayor Ken Ritter announced the appointment and congratulated Champagne on social media Monday evening.
Jamey Abshire resigned from the position effective January 14th. He has accepted a leadership role in the parks and recreation department of Lafayette Consolidated Government supervising programs and maintenance at LCG's parks and recreation centers.
Abshire also served as Youngsville's mayor pro tempore and was on the city council for six years. He was in an elected position.
Along with the appointment, a special election has been called for October 9 and November 13, 2021, for a permanent replacement to fulfill the remainder of the term. Qualifying will take place July 14-16, 2021
Champagne is no stranger to state politics. Champagne served six years in the state legislature representing Iberia and Vermilion Parishes before resigning to become Youngsville's Chief Administrative Officer. Prior to becoming a legislator, Champagne was Chief Administrative Officer for Iberia Parish.
In 2019, Champagne ran for the Mayor-President position in Lafayette.
