The Salvation Army of Lafayette kicked off its annual Christmas efforts at Lafayette City-Parish Hall on Friday, November 20.
The organization is beginning to collect donations to support those in need this Christmas season.
They say that, due to COVID-19, there could be a decrease in the number of traditional red kettles on street corners and at store entrances this Christmas season.
That decrease, the organization says, is due to several factors like consumers carrying less cash and fewer coin, more online shopping, unemployment rates, and the recent closures of some brick-and-mortar retail stores.
The iconic red kettles will still be up around Lafayette through November and December collecting donations.
Salvation Army officials and volunteers were joined at Friday's kick-off event by Mayor-President Josh Guillory.
