Police announced road closures in the Girard Park area that will take place on Sunday for a peaceful protest.

The closures will begin at 5:00 pm in the area of Girard Park Drive, Girard Woods Drive, and Girard Woods Road along with the residents closer to E. St. Mary on Girard Park Drive.

The Student Action & Organizing Committee (SAOC) and the Acadiana Coalition against Social Injustice (ACSI) are marching in solidarity with #BlackLivesMatter from the Maurice Heymann Memorial to the pavilion at the east end of Girard Park. They are marching as a community, with the intention of non-violence, part of a movement demanding #JusticeForGeorgeFloyd and demanding changes in local policing, according to a Facebook post.

In addition, they are also partnering with Move the Mindset to demand the removal of the General Mouton statue on Jefferson St.

At the pavillion a rally will be held featuring community organizations, speakers, and poets calling for an end to police brutality in the community.

The post says to bring signs and your neighbors, wear comfortable clothing and shoes, wear a protective mask and to hydrate.
