Volunteers from various community organizations gathered Saturday morning to do a little clean up along University Avenue.
Parish Proud, OneAcadiana, Boy Scouts, United Way of Acadiana, and several other groups and individuals started the clean up around 9 a.m. and will finish up at noon. Volunteers are cleaning the University Avenue Corridor from Willow to Highway 90.
Volunteers were able to participate in a variety of ways. Some picked up litter using a toolkit from Parish Proud, others used lawn equipment to edge sidewalks. Some marked storm drains with LCG's Environmental Quality's "Only Rain Down the Drain" markers and adhesive. Volunteers also gathered and removed various campaign signs in the area.
Republic Waste was also on hand to pick up bagged litter.
Organizers say the clean up is an opportunity to show how coordinated efforts to clean up the community can make a noticeable difference, and say they want to show how a collective effort can change what the community looks like, even for a short time.
"I hope that when people see us doing this, they recognize that there is a huge group of people in the community that care about our community and that they care what it looks like," explained Katy Dupre, Executive Director of Parish Proud. "They know there are people out there doing what they can to beautify it as well as to stop littering."
