Monday was Read Across America Day, a day that encourages children to read, and also Dr. Seuss' birthday.

United Way of Acadiana is hosting events throughout the week to celebrate.

Readings at the Abbeville Center were underway on Monday.

Later this week, Superhero Day and Dr. Deuss Day will be celebrated at their Lafayette location.

"We want to encourage reading and of course we want them to go back and let their parents know, "Can you read this book to me?" just encouraging reading once they leave here, just go home and encourage it at home," said Annette Victor, Center Director.

Read Across America which is a national program was created to help motivate kids to read, bring the joys of reading to students of all ages, and make all children feel valued and welcome.
