Phase I of Saint Streets construction begins

Posted
and last updated

Lafayette's Public Works Department recently began Phase I of a road construction project in the Saint Streets area that is expected to last about a week.

The project, called Asphalt Road Preservation (ARP), will improve the condition of the existing pavement and extend the pavement's life. The project's goal is to rejuvenate and seal dried, oxidized, and cracked asphalt pavement. Officials say this method will save money by significantly reducing the need for more costly base reconstruction and reducing the chance of construction delays.

The project requires two phases of construction - the first was completed last week. It involved the application of emulsified asphalt and aggregate to the road surface to seal the pavement. The first phase was a quick operation and allowed normal traffic to resume quickly. Residents may experience loose aggregate for a few days, and reducing traffic speeds in these areas is recommended. The loose aggregate is scheduled for removal from the project site in the next few days.

Once the curing of Phase I is complete, crews will move into Phase II. This will include a micro-surfacing overlay of the roadway, serving as the finished riding surface.

The project should be complete next week if weather permits.
