Eligible patients lined up Saturday morning at Frem Boustany Convention Center at the Heymann Performing Arts Center to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

The Louisiana Department of Health issued a statement on Tuesday encouraging hospitals to offer vaccines they don't need for their staff to others on the priority list. OLGH is starting that process to vaccinate community members, starting with existing Ochsner Lafayette General patients 70 years of age and older.

OLGH is communicating directly with those patients who are eligible and are by appointment only. OLGH officials said they received hundreds of replies for vaccinations within the initial group of 7,500 patients who were invited.

Saturday, OLGH set up a vaccine site at the Heymann Center in Lafayette, as it begins the process of administering the vaccine outside of its hospital locations. The site was only for patients who had been scheduled; no walk-ups were accepted.

The location was okay-ed by Lafayette Consolidated Government as a vaccine site, and officials say other locations may be utilized if there is a greater need for space as priority groups expand.

The health system expects the vaccine to be available to more across the community soon, and will contact patients about how and when they can schedule appointments to receive the vaccine.

Who is currently eligible to receive the vaccine?
