The Lafayette Parks and Recreation Department is pushing for more youth sports events in Lafayette.

With the first event kicking off over the weekend, they say there are many more events to come.

“This was our first Lafayette Parks and Recreation youth football combine and classic,” said Lafayette Parks & Recreation Athletic Supervisor, Walter Guillory.

Over 70 kids signed up competing against other youth groups from Texas. Something that the department see's as a positive impact for Lafayette's economy.

"You have people that will be at our hotels. Eating at our restaurant. So, we're extremely excited about that."

Having multiple NFL players interacting with the youth and keeping score is just the beginning of what's to come. Youth volleyball for both boys and girls is already set for March.

"We will have young people throughout the country coming to participate in that tournament."

After the USA Volleyball event, the youth Basketball event will shortly follow.

"The regional basketball tournament will encompass teams from Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama. We also have local Lafayette teams participating in that."

Overall, Acadiana residents can expect to see more national youth events being hosted right here in Lafayette.

If parents want to sign up their children, the department is pushing parents to get their child signed up early, so there are no issues for game day.
