SANTA RITA, Guam - A 2016 Lafayette High School graduate and Lafayette, Louisiana, native is serving with the U.S. Navy aboard one of the world's most advanced nuclear-powered submarines, USS Asheville.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Drake Forness is a sonar technician (submarine) aboard the Guam-based submarine, one of four Los Angeles-class submarines forward-deployed on the island.

A Navy sonar technician (submarine) is responsible for detecting obstacles and ensuring the safe navigation of the submarine.

Forness credits success in the Navy to many of the lessons learned in Lafayette.

"Growing up in the south has helped me experience lots of different people and cultures," Forness said. "These experiences have helped me to easily adapt to new people and places."
