The Lafayette Parish School System announced Smart Summer, learning activities and resources to encourage and support continued learning during the summer months.

During summer breaks, students can experience a loss in learning known as the "summer slide," according to LPSS. Statistics show that learning loss can occur during summer months if children's minds aren't periodically engaged in some type of learning activities.

Located on the LPSS website, families can access core subject information on in math and English language arts by grade level. These one-page flyers briefly describe learning that students may
have missed last year and what learning will occur in the upcoming year. It also provides suggested activities for parents and students. Parents can build upon that skill by having students read aloud, sing nursery rhymes, take turns reading, or ask students to summarize what was read. To enhance math skills, ask students to write fractions using dominoes or give probability with dice.
Everyday items such as coins are great for students to practice counting and addition.

These great Smart Summer resources can be found here. Addional resources can also be found on theLPSS eLearn site.
