UPDATE: Suspect in apartment complex shooting dead

The suspect in a Lafayette shooting was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after a pursuit on I-49 near Opelousas that ended in Bunkie.

The scene in Bunkie is active as of 4 p.m. Monday and State Police are asking motorists to avoid the area.

Earlier Monday, a woman was shot several times at a Lafayette apartment complex off Pierce Street. Police identified a suspect and issued a BOLO for the vehicle he was driving.

Around noon, Louisiana State Troopers spotted that vehicle on I-49 near Opelousas. They tried to pull it over, but the driver wouldn't stop and so they began a pursuit which continued into Avoyelles Parish.

The suspect vehicle stopped at the Bunkie exit, and troopers found him dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. No Troopers were injured during this incident.

State Police are investigating that, and Lafayette Police are investigating the shooting that left the woman in critical condition.

Police were called at about 11:30 a.m. Monday to the complex; they found a woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She's in critical condition at a local hospital.

Investigators are currently on scene and are actively working the incident to determine leads, police say.
