LAFAYETTE, La. - With more than $444 million in estimated taxable sales in April, 2020 year-to-date sales in Lafayette Parish reached $1.93 billion-4.45% lower than 2019. In the City of Lafayette, year-to-date taxable sales are down 7.25% compared to 2019, according to a press release from Lafayette Economic Development Authority (LEDA). However, sales in the City of Lafayette are down 14.29% from March 2020 to April 2020 and are down 18.18% compared to April 2019.

"We were expecting to see a decrease in our taxable sales in April and unfortunately, we will likely see further decreases in the coming months," said Josh Guillory, Lafayette Mayor-President. "This is why it is crucial that we do everything we can to help keep our businesses open and profitable and work to attract new businesses to diversify our economy."

Estimated taxable sales between March 2020 and April 2020 are down in municipalities across the parish: Lafayette (14.29%), Broussard (8.52%), Carencro (4.60%), Scott (4.22%), and Youngsville (6.68%). Sales are also down 18.36% in unincorporated areas, according to LEDA. Sales in Duson are up 12.87% from March to April.

"As the overall economy continues to feel the impacts of COVID-19, low oil prices, and the impending hurricane season, we expect to see additional declines in taxable sales through the summer," said Gregg Gothreaux, President and CEO of the Lafayette Economic Development Authority (LEDA). "LEDA will continue to work with our business community to ensure they maximize their earning potential. And our local retailers and service providers are a big part of the backbone of our community and we should support these businesses as the economy reopens in the coming weeks and months."

Sales tax collection numbers are gathered by the Lafayette Parish School System.
