LAFAYETTE, La. — The Lafayette Consolidated Government held its daily press briefing Wednesday to give an update on the COVID-19 health emergency.

Lafayette Mayor-President announced that LCG and the Lafayette Police Department are able to distribute 100,000 reusable, washable face masks that it received from the Hane's Corporation.

These masks are available to local businesses that fall into the Safe Shop category, which the Lafayette Economic Development Authority now estimates to be 75% of businesses in the parish.

According to Guillory, LPD will be handing out masks to those businesses that are not able to source masks on their own.

LPD will also be handing out masks to Safe Shop businesses during their compliance checks to see if those businesses are following the guidelines of the policy.

LCG will also begin giving stickers to businesses that fall under the Safe Shop Policy to show that they are in compliance with the guidelines.

LCG Minority Affairs Director Carlos Harvin said that LCG would soon begin going door-to-door to businesses on the Evangeline Thruway and Moss Street in Lafayette to help them with the policy.

As of noon on Wednesday, April 22, Lafayette Parish was reporting 435 cases of coronavirus with 17 deaths. There were no new deaths reported on Wednesday, which marks five days since a death has been reported in Lafayette Parish.

At the press conference on Tuesday, Lafayette Mayor-President Josh Guillory said that he had a conference call with several major big box retailers about the Safe Shop Policy and guidance on best practices that smaller retailers are following.

Guillory said the call included representatives from Academy, Albertson's, Home Depot, Stine's and Walmart.

Guillory said the retailers agreed to voluntarily follow guidance from the Safe Shop Policy and see the value in implementing the best practices. Read more from that press conference here.

He also gave a preview of Tuesday's city and parish council meetings. Read our story on those meetings here.
