Lafayette citizens gathered Saturday afternoon for a protest and rally in honor of George Floyd.

Organizers received permission from local authorities to hold the protest on the corner of Ambassador Caffery Parkway and Johnston Street, near Texas Roadhouse.

They asked members of the community to bring posters and signs, showing their support and honoring the Floyd family.

Organizers said they are not affiliated with any groups, but are a group of concerned citizens hoping to add their voices to the nationwide call for change.

"It shakes things up. How can you hear if a protest is just comfortable, just status quo and silence? Silence is violence. Literally, it means the death of some black people," said activist Chealsea Hayes. "It's just important that we get the cage rattling. We need to shake the rafters so people wake up. And if you're tired of hearing it, then help us."
