LAFAYETTE, La. — Louisiana State Police and the Lafayette Police Department continue to investigate a fatal officer-involved shooting which occurred Monday at an apartment complex off Kaliste Saloom Road.

LSP say that shortly after 6 pm on Feb. 10, they were requested by LPD to investigate a shooting incident involving two of their officers.

Detectives assigned to the LSP Bureau of Investigations are investigating the incident.

Troopers say an initial investigation revealed two LPD officers were called to the scene of a disturbance at Cypress Bend Townhouses, located in the 1000 block of Kaliste Saloom Road. The call was in reference to a disturbance involving a weapon.

While at the complex, troopers say a person, which LPD initially described as a man, approached the officers and a physical confrontation occurred leading to that person being shot and fatally wounded. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lafayette Parish Coroner’s Office.

That person's identity was not released.

An officer involved in the incident received non-life threatening injuries and was treated by medical personnel.

LSP say that the incident is currently under active investigation.

Following the shooting, the road was closed at the intersection with S. Beadle Road in Lafayette and drivers were detoured from the scene. Motorists were asked to take an alternate route around the area.

Residents in the apartment complex say that they heard between 7 to 8 shots.

Another tenant at the apartment complex says he heard “at least five shots.” He described the apartment complex as quiet and said a heavy police presence is unusual for the complex.

Video surveillance from inside an apartment home near where the shooting occurred was provided to KATC. In it, at least 7 shots can be heard.
