Lafayette Police are investigating a shooting at Girard Park that left two people injured.
Officers responded to a shooting incident at the park at 5 p.m. and found one victim suffering from a non-life threatening gunshot wound to his abdomen. Medical assistance was provided and the victim was transported to a local hospital.
While at the hospital, officers were approached by a second victim who was at Girard Park and who suffered a gunshot wound to the leg. Both victims are reported to be in stable condition.
Witnesses told police there was a family event at the Pavilion in the park, and sometime during the event several gunshots rang out. Lafayette Police were called shortly after.
Our media partners at The Advocate spoke with a young man who was there at the park; his family had gathered there following the funeral of his great-aunt. He told the newspaper that everyone was enjoying the nice weather, food and each other's company when shots rang out. He said it was his cousin that was shot, a through-and-through wound in the torso. To read the interview with the young man who was there, click here.
