The Lafayette Police Department hosted a Back to School Backpack and School Supplies giveaway on Friday.

The giveaway began at 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church located on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

The Back to School Backpack and School Supplies giveaway was created in conjunction with local community leaders, according to the police department.

Backpacks and school supplies will be given to children so they can be ready to begin the school year.

LPD says the event was made possible with contributions from Our Saviors’ Church, The Lafayette Police Union, Magnolia Peace Officers’ Association, and The Lafayette Fraternal Order of Police.

"We're just grateful for the opportunity that we're able to do something like this," said Sgt. Wayne Griffin, LPD Public Information Officer. "We encourage them to come out and get the supplies they need, so they can have a successful school year."
