Lafayette Parish residents are being invited to join local police departments for their annual "National Night Out" events on Tuesday, October 1.

The Lafayette Police Department will hold their crime prevention event at the Martin Luther King Center on Cora Street from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

According to the department, the event will include music, entertainment, food, games and displays by the Lafayette Police Department Mounted Unit, Motorcycle Unit, SWAT Bearcat and LPD Police Command Bus.

Described as one of the nation's largest crime prevention events, "National Night Out” annually sees around 37 million people in 15,000 communities from all fifty states participating with their local law enforcement agencies.

The event is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for the participation in local anti-crime efforts, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships throughout the city and send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back

All Lafayette Parish events are free to the public.

The cities of Broussard, Carencro, and Youngsville will also be hosting events. The Duson Police Department and Scott Police Department say they will not be holding an event on Tuesday.
