Lafayette organization distributes toys to children in need

An Acadiana organization is working to make the holidays a little bit more merry for some of the area's younger residents.

Community group Queens on the Move held a toy distribution Saturday on N. St. Antoine Street. Anyone was able to drive up to the location and receive a free gift for a child in their life aged 1-8 years old. Member Wanda Clemons said the gifts handed out may not have been big, but she thinks it's the love and the thought that counts.

"It might be just a basketball," she said, but even that can fill a child with joy.

Clemons said she feels a call to serve those in the community who are less fortunate, as is evident with past events she's been a part of as part of her non-profit, Wanda's Blessing. Earlier this year, Clemons cooked and handed out food to individuals in need and those displaced by Hurricane Delta.

She says serving those in need is something she will do until her last breath.

Saturday's toy distribution was the second annual event, and Santa even got in on the fun.

The event lasted as long as possible until all the toys were gone, but Clemons said any toy that wasn't given out today will be given to the Salvation Army.

"Let's give back to the community, let's not just accept," Clemons added. "It's better to give than to receive."
