LAFAYETTE, La. — A Lafayette High School student was awarded on Friday after being selected as the first prize winner of the Acadiana Regional Safety Coalition's Distracted Driving PSA contest.
An awards event was held December 18 at the Rosa Parks Transportation Center in Lafayette.
The contest asked students at high schools across Acadiana to illustrate scenes of distracted driving to be used in the coalition's social media and online campaign to prevent distracted driving and encourage teens not to text and drive.
Teague Bellard, was presented with the first place award by Rep. Mike Huval.
Bellard's original piece, “Don’t Get Caught in a Web of Distractions,” depicts a spider behind the wheel of a car, with all 8 legs engaged in a form of distracted driving.
The coalition says that contest evaluators appreciated Teague's commitment to the theme and the illustration of the many items that tempt drivers into driving distracted.

The coalitions says that over the past decade, distracted driving has become one of the leading causes of vehicle crashes in the U.S.
