LAFAYETTE, La. — Stephen Oats, 63, an attorney who served as an assistant city attorney for many years, has died.

Oats died Tuesday night at his home. Oats, of the firm Oats and Marino, has served Louisiana and Lafayette over the years as a Special Assistant Attorney General, as general counsel for the Lafayette Parish Clerk of Court and Assessor offices, and as an assistant city-parish attorney. Oats' service to Lafayette Parish began years ago, when he represented the Lafayette Parish Council before consolidation, and he also represented the Morial Convention Center in New Orleans and the LITE Commission here in Lafayette.

Oats graduated from UL and Tulane Law, and was the managing partner of his firm.

"He was a dedicated husband to his wife, Sylvia, and a dedicated member of both the Lafayette and ULL community," City-Parish Attorney Greg Logan told our media partners at The Advocate Wednesday. "His presence and contributions will be missed."

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 30, 2021, at a 1:30 PM Mass of Christian Burial in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Lafayette, for Stephen Joseph Oats, 63, who died suddenly on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at his residence in Lafayette.

His obituary has been posted on the Martin and Castille Funeral Home website, which you can view here.
