Lafayette Animal Shelter and Care Clinic is urging pet owners to bring their furry friends inside during the cold weather.
Just like humans, pets are vulnerable to frostbite and hypothermia.
And a reminder, cars are one of many hazards to small animals. Warm engines in parked cars attract cats and small wildlife. They may crawl up under the hood to keep warm.
To avoid injuring any hidden animals, bang on your car's hood to scare them away before starting your engine.
"One of the important things during the cold weather is of course to have the pet indoors if possible," said Lynn Bourque, Animal Adoption Rescue Supervisor.. "There's different factors that affect which pets can do better with different temperatures so if you have a young animal if you have an elderly animal those animals are not going to do well in the cold weather."
