LAFAYETTE, La. - With more than $536 million in estimated taxable sales in July, year-to-date sales in Lafayette Parish reached $3.52 billion-2.8% lower than 2019 but 1.8% higher than 2018. Parish-wide, sales have increased 20.7% from the low in April 2020.
In the City of Lafayette, year-to-date estimated sales are down 5.3% compared to 2019; however, July 2020 to July 2019 sales are up 6.5%. Sales in Lafayette are up 24.8% from April 2020.
Year-to-date estimated sales are up in Carencro (8.6%), Youngsville (9.0%), and unincorporated areas (11.5%) compared to 2019. Sales are down in Broussard (6.6%), Duson (10.1%), and Scott (4.1%).
Estimated taxable sales between April 2020 and June 2020 are up in: Broussard (5.9%), Carencro (9.2%), Scott (13.0%), Youngsville (8.3%), and unincorporated areas (26.5%). Sales are down 4.9% in Duson.
"July's taxable sales, buoyed by summer and back to school shopping, continue to show improvement from declines in March and April," said Gregg Gothreaux, President and CEO of the Lafayette Economic Development Authority (LEDA). "The region may see a spike in taxable sales in the coming months as neighboring parishes impacted by Hurricane Laura continue recovery efforts-as was seen following Hurricane Katrina and the 2016 floods."
Sales tax collection numbers are gathered by the Lafayette Parish School System.
