On Tuesday, September 1, two 18-wheelers full of supplies arrived in Lafayette for distribution to areas in Lake Charles affected by Hurricane Laura.
Asbury United Methodist Church in Lafayette will become a temporary supply center as supplies continue to arrive from church groups across the country.
The United Methodist Church says that the trucks arrivef from Texas at 12:00 pm on Tuesday and that supplies will be delivered over the next few days, weeks and months.
The effort, according to UMC, was coordinated by the Louisiana Conference and Texas Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. Many other denominations are also helping, they say.
"No one wishes for disasters like this to happen. It's always a tragedy, but when they do happen we know what to do," said Sr. Pastor of Absury John Cannon. "We in Acadiana know how to step up and help people. That is the heart of who we are in this area, not just in this church, but in this whole community. We step up and help. I think that is one of the most important things we can do is help people no matter who they are help people know the love of Jesus Christ just by the help we can give."
Volunteers will unload and store supplies beginning today.
Supplies donated for those affected by Hurricane Laura include the following:
Tarping Supplies
- Roof tarps – reinforced, UV resistant, water resistant, minimum 20’x15’ (Not all tarps are waterproof)
- Lumber: 1X2x8’s OR 2x2x8’s or longer
- Nails: Button Cap /roofing nails
- Nails: 2-1/2” nails
- Screws: 2-1/2” deck screws
- Generators and unused (and empty) gas cans
Household Supplies
- Non-perishable (basic) foods
- Water or beverages that do not require refrigeration
- Personal hygiene: shampoo, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, combs, brushes, depends – either individually or in prepared kits.
- Baby Food/formula
- Diapers Wipes
- Household cleaning supplies / Wipes
- Hand sanitizer
- Small first aid kits
- Face masks
- Insect repellent
- Mosquito netting
