A city-wide Health & Fitness Expo will take place on Saturday, September 19 at the Northgate Mall in Lafayette.
The expo will take place from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm at the mall located at 1800 Evangeline Thruway on the Moss Street side.
Organizers say this year's expo will be set around Free Drive-Thru COVID-19 testing.
Along with vendors, youth activities, fitness and nutrition demos and health educational material provided by the Region 4 Office of Public Health, those who attend will receive a free COVID test and mask.
A picture I.D. and insurance card are necessary to receive a COVID-19 test. Results will be provided within 3-5 days by the clinics administering tests. Guideline material will also be provided on what to do after taking the test.
Tests will be administered by the Southwest La. Healthcare mobile unit along with Northside Community Health Center and Compassionate Care Clinic.
Organizers say that Hurricane Laura evacuees are also welcomed to take part in the free event.
There will also be a prize drawing at 1:00 pm.
“This year we remain planning our annual event. We joined the movement to help Stop the Spread of Covid-19. Our committee and partnering clinics & organizations were committed to promoting safety protocol such as (face covering, social distancing-including testing)," said EXPO 2020 organizer Vanessa Williams. "Louisiana Department of Health indicates Lafayette Parish is at 6.1 percent as the percent positivity of tests per parish. This means COVID is still active. Testing is not happening as it should. Just as we got to 6.1 percent, whatever you did, those that were doing what we are supposed to do, that's the same thing you need to continue to do."
