Lafayette's Gear Up students participated in a writing event at UL today.

GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is a program that helps expose kids to higher education opportunities starting in middle school, so they're more likely to continue their education after graduation from high school.

Today, students from Acadiana, Carencro, Lafayette, and Northside high schools will be participating in a writing event with the Acadiana National Writing Project, UL, and GEAR UP.

The theme for the day was "Unexpected Perspective", with all the exercises focusing on a surprising way of delving into the creative process.

Josh Capps, Co-Director of the National Writing Project of Acadiana, explained a bit of the process.

"It usually starts off with some sort of free write, and that's where they get to bring whatever they want to bring in and then we sort of push it a direction that may feel like it limits them, but it also brings out the creativity."

Exercises included ekphrastic writing and constructing villanelles, as well as a special nod to Halloween. The event took place at the Acadiana Center for the Arts.
