LAFAYETTE, La. - Lafayette Fire Department's 103rd recruit academy began Monday with the thirteen recruits. Ten of the recruits are for Lafayette and three for Scott Fire Department.

Fire Chief Robert Benoit addressed the new recruits this morning. "I thank each one of you for choosing the fire service as a career. It's a noble and rewarding profession that serves the community upon which you live. The job of a firefighter is demanding and dangerous at times, however, the return on investment is immeasurable. I wish you all a successful academy. "

The recruits will experience a very intense training academy for the next 16 weeks. Their training will encompass academic and practical learning of the profession as well as physical fitness.

The ten recruits hired for Lafayette were to fill vacant positions due to retirements and resignations.

Scott Fire Department's three recruits were part of a SAFER grant.

The 103rd recruit academy is expected to graduate July 2, 2020.
