Foster the Love assembling bags, accepting school supplies for foster children

Volunteers are gathering in Lafayette today to help foster children ahead of the start of the school year.

Foster the Love is putting together First Night Bags for children entering foster care in South Louisiana. They're also accepting donations of new school supplies and uniforms.

First Night Bags are duffle bags filled with essentials that children might need as they go through the transition into a new foster home.

"Many times the kids are removed so quickly from their homes that they don't have time to bring along anything that belongs to them," explained Foster the Love's executive director Heather Duhon. "When they receive these bags, the bag is new and that belongs to them. So they don't have to arrive at their foster home empty handed."

Volunteer Shala Wells says the process can be very difficult for the children.

"They are being pulled from someone they love who they've known their whole life into this new situation and they can't take anything of their own."

The events are both being held at the Christian Life Center in Lafayette at 411 Verot School Road until 2 p.m.

Check back later for more on the event.
