The mother of a former UL football player who died unexpectedly over the weekend is mourning his loss - and the manner in which he died.
27-year-old Al Riles was shot and killed Saturday in Fort Worth, his mother Deidre tells The Daily Advertiser. Riles explained that her son went to talk to a friend of his and they argued.
"Another guy was out there in the car. A couple of guys...another guy supposedly got out of the car, and he shot my son. He shot my son while he was on the ground tussling with this other guy. He shot him," Deidre said.
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner confirmed to the paper that Riles' death was a homicide caused by a gunshot wound to the chest.
Deidre explains that the sad part about her son's death is that the alleged shooter was Al's friend.
Riles lived in Texas and was pursuing his passion of cooking. He held a graduate degree in criminal justice from UL, The Advertiser reports.
The Fort Worth Police Department had no updates on the case Tuesday, a spokesperson told the paper.
A GoFundMe has been set up by Riles' family to assist with funeral expenses.
"He impacted every life he touched. Had a smile that could light up a room. A laugh that would fill the air with warmth. We lost a friend, a brother, a daughter lost her father, and a mother lost her son. A life gone too soon," Deidre wrote on the campaign site.
