KATC got a first look Thursday at Zoosiana's newest addition - Millie the Giraffe!
Born last month, Millie stands a little taller than five feet and weighs about 130 pounds. Zoo officials say she's doing great.
Matt Oldenburg, Zoosiana manager, explained that Millie is named in honor of Melinda Mangham, a longtime Acadiana educator who died earlier this year.
"Mangham was a longtime educator here in Acadiana who impacted the lives of countless children, students, and families all throughout this region," explained Oldenburg.
Millie was born last month to Evangeline and Gabriel, who zoo officials say are "doing great and are each helping Millie along."
The zoo has dedicated a pasture habitat to move the giraffes into a bigger, greener space as the giraffe family grows. You can contribute to the "Giraffe Center Fund" at zoosiana.com/giraffes.
You can also go visit Millie, her parents, and her older sister Josie, at the zoo any day of the week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., weather permitting.
